WCYO in pictures - a visual journey through our music.
The WCYO and WCMA 30 Year Celebration Concert at the West Coast Fossil Park was a special evening marking three decades of music-making on the West Coast. The concert showcased the strength and spirit of the West Coast Youth Orchestra, with the Senior Orchestra delivering a performance that truly captivated the audience. The orchestra itself was a powerful symbol of continuity, bringing together current members, staff, and alumni on one stage. The WCYO Band, Marimba Band, and Junior Percussion Ensemble each added their own personality to the programme, filling the space with colour, rhythm, and excitement. Every item reflected how far the organisation has grown and how much pride the young musicians take in performing together.
The audience also enjoyed solo and chamber performances from alumni, staff, and current students, a reminder of the strong musical community built through the WCYO and WCMA over the past 30 years. Guided by dedicated teachers and student leaders, the ensembles played with confidence and real joy, filling the venue with a sense of celebration. More than a concert, the evening felt like a gathering of a community connected by music, shared history, and the excitement of what still lies ahead.
The International Youth Orchestra Bridges (IYOB) Tour was a celebration of collaboration, excellence and connection, bringing young musicians from South Africa, the UK, the US and Australia together in a shared musical journey.
Hosted in partnership with the West Coast Youth Orchestra and the Stellenbosch Youth Orchestra, the tour featured five unique Symphonic Bridges performances at remarkable venues, including the Baxter Theatre and the Endler Concert Series at Stellenbosch University.
Each concert had its own character, highlighting the heart and commitment of the musicians while showcasing the spirit of international partnership. Under the baton of world-renowned British conductor Alexander Walker, audiences experienced inspiring performances that reflected months of hard work and artistic growth.
More than a concert tour, IYOB was about building bridges and forming lasting friendships. Watching young musicians connect across cultures, share ideas and support one another created unforgettable moments that extended far beyond the stage.
The tour rekindled old friendships, forged new bonds and reminded everyone involved that music has the power to unite people across borders in meaningful and lasting ways.
WCYO performed at the third annual Classic Koelkamers concert at the Koelkamers Theatre, marking a vibrant Youth Day celebration that proudly showcased the talent of West Coast youth. The evening opened with the dynamic Jazz Band, followed by the debut of the newly formed Marimba Band, whose performance signalled an exciting new chapter for the ensemble. Audiences were also treated to impressive performances by the Percussion, Winds and Strings ensembles, each demonstrating the depth of skill and commitment within the orchestra.
The Junior Orchestra, conducted by Elmarie Lith, delivered a confident performance that highlighted the promise of these growing musicians. The concert concluded with the Senior Orchestra, conducted by Carina Brown, who performed Kaiser Waltz and Jerusalema. The evening celebrated hard work, collaboration and youthful energy.
